#08 • Box Relationships and the Torso
Now that we understand a little bit about boxes we can take it further and add a second box and explore how these two boxes relate in space and specifically how they can help us understand the torso.
From Beans to Boxes
The magic bean is a simple way to construct torso, but when we turn our circles in a cubes, we’re giving ourselves a little more information about how the torso exist in 3-D space. The top box represents our rib cage the bottom the hip typically this rib cage box is longer in height than a box for a woman. We can make the hip box longer and width.
2. The Chewy Center
The boxes are connected by the soft belly which we can think of almost as chewing gum this middle connecting part is softer and malleable. The rib cage and hip are more solid being made of bone. The gum can be squashed and stretched, and if we favor a stretch to one side, it will compress on the other, consider how the softer gum substance might interact with the harder boxes and how a for like gravity will pull it down
3. More 3D Information
The biggest advantage to dry the torso with boxes is that we have different planes up front back top bottom on sides that help us better understand how the character can tilt lean twist and before shortened all of this better communicates dimensionality
Now Let ‘s take these ideas and spend 10 minutes turning shapes into characters
